ELECTROMAGNETIC FREQUENCIES (EMFs)
How to reduce exposure to electromagnetic pollution.
If you haven't heard of electromagnetic fields (5G technology, cell phones, LED light bulbs, smart buildings) and how they can affect human health, you will soon become familiar with them as more and more people are affected by sensitivity to electromagnetic pollution every day.
Electricity was initially introduced to the general public as a form of long-term illumination in a light bulb. But in just over a century, electricity has provided us with a vast array of technological innovations.
Even though we lead more comfortable lives, our appliances and other gadgets may be making us sick. It turns out that they all emit what are called dirty energy and electromagnetic frequencies (EMFs).
Many of these frequencies are very different from those found in nature. As our environment becomes denser with so many man-made EMFs, our bodies are bombarded with them on a daily basis, causing organic alterations in both our body and mind, to the point of leading to illness.
The four main components of EMFs: Electric fields, magnetic fields, radio frequencies and dirty electricity, also called electromagnetic pollution or electromagnetic interference (EMI).
These frequencies are starting to gain relevance at this time due to the increased population in urban centers, above all, and thus, the needs that arise from them: more production of electronic devices, cell phones, antenna towers to achieve all the coverage that is needed; Wi-Fi, etc.
By better understanding EMFs and their forms, we will see how each of them affects human well-being in ways that we are only just beginning to understand.
Electric fields
Electric fields are produced when particles are charged, either by natural friction or by voltage. Electric fields become stronger the closer they are to the source.
The most common producers of electric fields in our homes are the electrical wiring and the wiring in the walls. Our homes typically run on a voltage of 60 hertz AC (Alternating Current). This means that each charge of electricity in the house changes from negative to positive 60 times per second. Because we spend most of our time at home or at work, the cells in our bodies are in a constant battle of attraction and repulsion and therefore do not have much opportunity to rest.
Many homes have electric fields between 2,000 and 3,000 kilovolts, which far exceeds what is considered “safe.” In addition, electric fields extend up to 1.80 meters from their source and affect people even when electrical appliances are turned off.
Now, on a health level, constant exposure to electric fields interferes with the functioning of the Pineal gland and its production of melatonin, specifically. Melatonin is the hormone released during deep sleep and is vital for the repair of daily wear and tear on the body. This interference leads to other complications such as chronic fatigue, increased allergies, insomnia and eventually, depression.
Magnetic fields
Magnetic fields are produced by electrical and electronic devices that contain a transformer or motor. The most well-known are microwave ovens, refrigerators, digital alarm clocks, hair dryers, washing machines and dishwashers; and fluorescent lights.
Old plumbing and wiring also lead to increased current loads. These magnetic fields can cause disorders such as the development of various types of cancer, chronic fatigue and acute depression.
Radiofrequency radiation
This is produced by electrical charges passing through an antenna. Radio frequency is mainly used in communication instruments such as telecommunication towers, broadcast antennas, mobile phones and wireless technologies such as Wi-Fi routers, cordless phones, Bluetooth. These waves transmit information from one point to another, making fast communication possible.
It is mobile phones that often cause health problems. This is because we often hold them close to our brains and for long periods of time. The other issue with mobile phones has to do with cell towers. Living near a cell tower or in close proximity means a constant bombardment of radio frequency radiation.
Another radio frequency aggressor is Wi-Fi from wireless modems and routers, cordless phones and game consoles. Now, new electrical appliances such as washing machines, refrigerators, and electric pots that are compatible with smart meters emit radio frequency radiation.
Associate Professor Martin Blank of Columbia University, USA, has published a testimony highlighting that “stress proteins” develop in human cells when they are exposed to radiofrequency radiation. These “stress proteins” are released to protect the body, indicating that the human body perceives these radiofrequencies as harmful. ( 1 )
The prolonged release of “stress proteins” due to radiofrequencies is linked to cancer, infertility, sleep disorders, memory problems and damage to the central nervous system.
Electromagnetic pollution or dirty electricity or electromagnetic interference (EMI)
Let's say there is clean electricity (sunlight is a natural form of electromagnetic frequency) and dirty electricity, which differ basically by their frequency. Clean electricity is considered to have a flat wave of 60 Hertz, while dirty electricity is altered and includes other very high frequencies.
EMI enters our homes through wiring and plumbing, the ground itself, and a large number of household appliances. But one of the biggest sources of EMI is cell phone towers. These towers run on direct current (DC) although the current that reaches them is alternating current (AC) and it is precisely the process of converting the current to DC that turns it into electromagnetic interference (EMI) and that is what reaches our homes through the wiring.
Problems caused by IEM include diabetes, migraines, anxiety, multiple sclerosis, muscle and joint problems, and even suicide.
A cheap way to tell if your home has EMI is by using an AM radio. Set the dial between two stations where white noise is heard and play it to the electrical outlets in the house. If you hear a hissing sound, there is interference in that area.
Some practices that can help you reduce exposure to EMI and EMF
The first time I heard that someone was moving to the countryside because they were sensitive to electromagnetic fields, it seemed unreal to me. Now I see that more and more people, in different parts of the world, are affected, and not necessarily because they are excessive in their use of electrical devices or because they are glued to their cell phones day and night.
To protect your home from dangerous electromagnetic fields:
- Get rid of electric blankets, heating pads and electric heaters as they are conductors of electricity.
- Extension cords and cables in the house must be covered and grounded.
- Turn off any circuits in your room (smoke detector, alarm, etc.) so you can rest.
- Use a battery-operated alarm clock instead of an electric-digital one
- Leave about 20 centimeters of distance between your bed and the wall as electrical wiring can emit significant undesirable magnetic fields.
- If your room is located near a power grid, position your bed so that it is at least 1.8 – 2 meters away from that strong magnetic source.
- The refrigerator and entertainment center in your home are the biggest producers of magnetic fields. If your bedroom is located near the kitchen or TV/video game room, make sure your bed is located on the opposite side of the room from those areas.
To protect yourself from radiofrequency radiation:
- Turn off your cell phone and keep it out of your bedroom at night. When not in use, put your phone in airplane mode so it doesn't have to communicate with the cell tower.
- Avoid using hands-free devices with Bluetooth connection, although they are very convenient, they are constantly sending frequencies to your brain. It is better to use the speaker to keep the phone as far away from the body as possible.
- Do not use your cell phone in a car or on public transportation. Radiofrequency radiation bounces off walls, returning and continually bombarding you with dangerous radiation.
- If you have internet at home, try to use an Ethernet connection instead of Wi-Fi. The same damage can be done with cordless phones. Try to make and receive your calls on a landline instead of holding your cell phone up to your head for long periods of time.
- To ensure your home remains EMI-free, start reducing or eliminating the use of dimmer switches, wireless products, printers, scanners, computers, televisions, and energy-saving materials.
- Eliminate spiral fluorescent and LED bulbs ( here's why they're harmful) as much as possible and replace them with incandescent bulbs (full spectrum or far infrared).
Your bedroom
If you have been following my articles for some time, you will notice that they all promote hygiene of life, that is, I am continually researching ways in which we can live in the most natural way, practicing preventive medicine at home and creating habits that help us achieve this. One of them is quality of sleep.
Personally, I do everything I know to ensure that my sleep is deep and restful. I leave my cell phone outside the bedroom, I try to keep the place as dark and cool as possible, I use some relaxing essential oils… in short, everything I know. But to complete the information I have given you in this post, one key piece is missing and that is what we sleep on: the mattress.
Did you know that most mattresses are produced with lots of harmful toxins? Some contain flame retardant chemicals, foam, petroleum-based latex, vinyl made with phthalates, and heavy metals.
These chemicals and materials used to make mattresses are not only bad for our bodies, but for the planet as manufacturing companies do not use sustainable practices.
If we can't tolerate all those poisons in our food, why should we allow them in our bedrooms? Our bedrooms are our sanctuaries. We rest there, we dream there, we love there, we cuddle there. That sacred atmosphere should be free of chemicals and undesirable materials.
The alternatives
I have done a little research in order to give you the options if you want to change your mattress.
Taking into account electromagnetic pollution, an ecological mattress can counteract several of the agents that attack the body.
Munay It is an economical option that allows you to enjoy your rest without the presence of harmful chemicals. In any case, it is important that you take the time to investigate whether the entire manufacturing process is 100% ecological.
Nikken Considering that the earth is a natural magnetic field and contact with it benefits the optimal functioning of the body.
Nikken has developed magnetic technology that allows the body to maintain or regain its natural homeostasis when faced with everyday electromagnetic pollution.
Far Infrared . All living beings on this planet absorb this spectrum of light to balance our body temperature. The far infrared technology applied at Nikken allows the body's own temperature to be fully dispersed and maintained, without allowing the body to lose heat.
This far-infrared technology applies heat to the body's tissues, increasing blood circulation and allowing the body to improve its pH, detoxify, recover, and sore muscles to relax and be relieved. Muscle spasms tend to be reduced in frequency and intensity.
Negative ions . On the other hand, ions are charged particles, either positive or negative when they gain or lose electrons.
Scientists have long been studying the relationship between negative ions and the physical balance of humans. Negative ions are called “the vitamin of the air” and an environment charged with negative ions is a factor of health, tranquility and comfort for humans.
If the air we breathe is loaded with negative ions, it helps our respiratory system to function efficiently and eliminate harmful substances from the body more easily. If the air is loaded with positive ions, the person is vulnerable to respiratory problems such as allergies, asthma, bronchitis, etc.
Places where the air has high levels of negative ions are forests, beaches (not crowded with people), near waterfalls.
Environments with positive ions are areas with a large number of electrical appliances that produce significant amounts of electrical current.
If you feel it is time to change the mattress on your bed and make improvements to your surroundings, Nikken has a promotion that may interest you. Click on the following link to learn more about the sleeping system:
